Shibaraku

刚刚跟朋友去吃shibaraku的sushi,一碟只是RM1.20,很值得吃, 只是for selected items only。

The Star

Our famous chain pharmacies....

Just read a blog on "So much for Guardian", which is written by a blogger, named "just minishorts",where this post was written 2 years ago. She wrote about her feeling after visiting Guardian (no offense), and how she was treated by the supervisor. For more information, you can just click THIS.

Hmmm....After reading this post, I would like to share my feeling and what i had encountered on this matter.

For your information, I am a pharmacy student (as some of you know and not for others) and was doing my final year thesis on community pharmacies last 2 months. I have to walk-in some of the pharmacies in Klang Valley and Malacca to hand-out some of the questionnaires to the pharmacists and persuade them to participate in the survey. For sure, I have to visit both independent and chain pharmacies.

* independent pharmacies= pharmacy that has less than 3 stores
chain pharmacies= pharmacy that has more than 4 stores, for example Guardian, Watson, Caring, Vitacare, etc

As mention in "Just minishorts"'s blog, I noticed and experienced that there are quite a lot of Guardian stores that have no pharmacists on duty although there is prescription counter in that. And this apply to some of the Watson's pharmacies too. However, I didn't encountered this situation in Caring pharmacies.

Another thing is, the schedule of their working hours are always 10am-6pm, normal office hours. And their off day are normally 2 days, the most busy days-Saturday and Sunday. There is a store I had encountered, the pharmacist off 5days instead of 2 days. I was feeling shock, this may be because the pharmacist taking his/her leave to rest or other reasons. But the problem is the headquarter office never send any pharmacists from other stores to replace this pharmacist and the schedule there display "off day". What will the customers felt? Thinking that pharmacists are not professional and yet, this only represent only a small bunch of pharmacists. However, this customers' perspective on pharmacists will definately apply to all pharmacists, no matter hospital, community or industrial pharmacists and this really will affect the pharmacy image our other pharmacists trying to maintained. So, how about ours? The newly, and going to graduate pharmacy students?

And many people will say, there is nothing wrong with it mah? Pharmacists are human also, they need rest. But what I want to say is, why this big chain pharmacies keep on open more and more new stores intead of hire more pharmacists? There are a lot of Guardian and Watson's do not have pharmacists on duty, but in public's eyes, there ARE pharmacies where pharmacists suppose on-duty there. Actually there is a signboard indicate whether the chain pharmacy is a store with or without pharmacy counter. But, how many of them will notice it? Because of the huge promotions organised by this chains, the public are confused with it and missunderstand all stores have pharmacy counter.

Anyway, I didn't encounter any Caring pharmacies without pharmacists on duty. They have 2 pharmacists instead, which working in a rountine basis. There will be a pharmacist on duty start from the stores open until it close. They usually work from 9.30am-9.30pm. Anyway, they only have to work 3-4days a week and the remaining day are replaced by other pharmacist. Why Caring can do it but not for other chains? After read the comment in that blog, there was an ex-Guardian pharmacist said:

We, pharmacists, always look for the opportunity to practice what we learned such as dispensing the right medicine with the right advices to the right person at the right dosing in order for us to achieve job satisfaction . Every pharmacist loves to provide such services but such chances r very very rare in guardian.

In guardian, pharmacists work like a clerk + dispenser (esp those store managers). The management gives us all sort of paper work to do untill it occupies most of our time and it overwhelms most pharmacists. Right, the quality of pharmaceutical care is not there. Furthermore, Guardian mgt focuses a damn lot on promotions and pharmacists hv to set up all these promotions themselves including finding empty space for 100plus). We r not happy with all these non-sense and thats why more of us r leaving this “supermarket” including those senior pharmacists. They just piss us off!!!

What would be in your mind when you first think of Guardian or Watson? Is it a pharmacy? Or it is a grocer? Or do you have any other answers?

From the words above, not only Guardian look like grocers, which sell anything range from confectionery, bath care, hair care, cosmetic, even baby pampers to of course medicines (in some chains with pharmacy counter), but this is the same for most of the chain pharmacies. This situation in less independent pharmacies, which may be because they are smaller and do not affort to compete with this chains as their modals are too small. And thus, sometimes you will think that only those independent pharmacy looked more like pharmacy, which selling medicines.

Finally, I hope there will be some changes in the management side of these chain pharmacies as from the comment wrote by "just minishort" 2 years ago, but I did not see any improvement in it. they should hire more pharmacists so that there will be a pharmacist on duty throughout the business hour by offer better salary ( i heard some rumors said that the salary for pharmacists are too low and thus, some of them resigned). Other than that, not only pharmacists, staffs should also be trained and undergo training often in order to maintain pharmacy professinal image. Don't spoil our profession because of one ya. Please, and please maintain our professional image....

We are professional, aren't we?

P/s:
What I said above do not mean to offense anyone. This is only my feeling after I read the post and after I had done my survey among the community pharmacies that I had encountered. Anyway, what I say may be not agree by some of you and you are feel free to comment on it.

Rape of A 3 year old Girl and a 9 month old baby

Just read an email on the "Rape of A 3 year old Girl and a 9 month old baby". The mail is as following:

Last week a 3 year old girl in South Africa was beaten and raped. She is still alive. The man responsible was released on bail yesterday. He is walking the streets.

This is a very important petition. It is an essential part of the justice system for children. You may have already heard that there's a myth in South Africa that having sex with a virgin will cure AIDS. The younger the virgin, the more potent the cure. This has led to an epidemic of rapes by infected males, with the correspondent infection of innocent kids. Many have died in these cruel rapes.

Recently in Cape Town , a 9-month-old baby was raped by 6 men.

Please think about that for a moment. The child abuse situation is now reaching catastrophic proportions and if we don't do something, then who will?

Famine Challenge Series--Food

The third famine challenge that i would like to share is about food.

"Every child should have enough food to eat to grow healthily."
Convention on the Rights of the Child, Article 24

Everyday, 40,000 children under the age of five die from malnutrition.

CAMBODIA--"we're starving, and the best food we can afford is rat meat." Ty, 12, and her family live on the streets.

Every day, 3-year-old Tsepiso (left) suffers the consequences of Lesotho's worst drought in 30 years. "Sometimes I'm hungry and there's no food at home," says her sister, 5-year-old Selloane. "So I go to my relatives' house to eat. My mom sends me." Even when there is food, it's often just starch. "When I don't have any money to buy vegetables or beans, we eat plain maize meal like today, and sometimes we eat twice instead of three times a day," says the girls' mother. In this photo, Tsepiso shares a lunch of maize with her cousin, Mookho.Children and their families in southern Africa — specifically the countries of Lesotho, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe — are facing the risk of starvation because of recent drought. The leaders of all three countries have declared states of emergency, as they are facing a massive food shortage with no reprieve in sight.

12 million people are going without food in Southern Africa. Severe dry spells, drought and recent heavy rains as well as flooding have contributed to the emergency food shortage. Three-year-old John Bulhani are waiting for a life-saving, daily ration of a corn-soybean-blend cereal which is provided to children under the age of five by a world vision sponsored program.

Just want to ask you all a question:

Do you know what is the main cause of hunger?

A. War
B. Food shortages
C. Over-population
D. Poverty

Think before see the answer ya.
The answer is D, poverty.

Do you know that the world produces enough food to feed everyone but many do not have enough land to grow food for themselves, nor do they have money to buy it from others.
They may not look hungry, but the lack of nutrition is silently weakening their immune systems. They take longer to recover from illness and are likely to fall sick again.

postscript:
We tends to waste alot of food, especially when we have our meal outside. Many of the meal's portion is quite big and we can't finish it. But if we are willing to share the food with others surrounding us by offering some of the food, food wastage can be be reduced to minimum.
I tend to scold friends that like to waste food and i know they are unhappy with it. But after a period of time,i saw some changes on their behaviour, they are much more appreciating their food as compare last time. This is a good sign, this means that they are listening to what I said, and willing to change.
For those like to waste food, please remember that everyday, there are 40,000 children under the age of five die from malnutrition. And you, indirectly deprive their sources of getting food.

Famine Challenge Series--Shelter

The next famine challenge that i would like to share is about shelther.

"Every child should have a safe home and protection"
Convention on the Rights of the Child, Article 16, 24

IRAQ--Hadi, 12, and his family of six have been living as refugees or the last 3 and a half years. They were forced to flee the country when militants threatened to kill their father.

For more information, can visit THIS.

2 million Iraqis have fled their country and are scattered across the Middle East. In many cases, they are stuck - unable to go back, and unable yo settle where they are now.

Many of them are children.

Children who have experienced severe violence and trauma - they have lost not just their homes, but family members and a sense of security.
Missing Home:

  1. The United Nations estimates that there are 100 million homeless people in the world. That's roughly 4 times the population of Malaysia.
  2. When natural disasters strike poor communities, they end up staying in tents for months, maybe even in years, because they do not own the land their houses were on.
  3. War forces millions from their homes, and many will never return.

photos are adopted from World Vision Website
Information adopted from : The 10th Anniversary 30-hour Famine Camper's Handbook

postscript:
I still remember that during the 30hr famine camp, there was a video on the children saying thank you to all of the sponsors. There was one sentence spoke by the child: "We are not the future, we are also the present." We always think that children are our future, but we never think from their point of view. What they want is treating them as equal as others, not treating differently just because they are still young, have no rights to speak or express their feeling.

And at the time they appreciating us for helping, suddenly i feel like want to cry. This is because what I have done is too little to get their appreciation, and I can really feel their sincererity. They really appreciate us in deep of thier heart. And i promise to myself, I should do more in future, or should I start now in order to help more of them. They really need our help.

(Famine Challenges Series--Water)

Today, i would like to share some about the Famine Challenges--Water:

"Every child should have water that is safe to drink close to their homes"
Convention on the rights of the Child, Article 24

GHANA-"We know the water is contaminated, but we have no choice." A child holds up a glass of water from his village's only water source, a pond that is a stew of mud and animal waste.
In an age where we can send astronauts into space, 1.1 billion people struggle for the lack of a basic natural resource-water.
Water related diseases such as cholera, typoid, and guinea worm kill 6,000 people every day-equivallent to 20 jumbo jets crashing everyday.

Asma Bibli lives in Jhangi village in Pakistan. The 10-year-old climbs a steep mountain path, walks through a deep forest, and carries this heavy water container on her head to reach the nearest water source -- an hour away.

Water shockers:

  1. Girls are often entrusted with the arduous task of fetching water. Instead of studying, they spend long hours fetching water that is often contaminated.
  2. Flusing the toilet once uses about 20 litres of water. That's the amount of water an average African family uses in a day.
  3. The cost of bringing clean water to a community is roughly RM7 per person per year. That's cheaper than an ice-blended drink!

Good News:

In the past 20 years, World Vision has helped provided clean water for more than 10 million people, building wells and pumps, and educating people about the importance of hygiene.

Postscript:
The water we flush everytime in toilet is equal to the total amount of water (20L) an average African family used a day. If we went for toilet 5-8 times a day, means that we flush off the clean water needs for 5-8 family. If we didin't use the flushing, just clean it with normal paip, we can save up to 100-160L of clean water a day. and this can provide clean water to those families. Clean water is very important as drinking clean water can keep us away from water-related dieseases which spread through dirty water. Thus, everytime when we flush the toilet, lets us think about their situation, hopefully we can reduce the amount of water flush by using only the water paip.

(The Convention on The Rights of the Child) CRC

I just finished posting some of the photos on the activities organized in the 10th Anniversary 30hour famine camp i went last 2 weeks, sorry for those do not know mandarin, as i post those in mandarin. Anyway, do you guys know what is the purpose or aim of this camp? For this year, the famine focuses on child rights. How many of us know that child also had their own rights? As we know most of the time, only adults or those rich people have their rights while those poor people have no rights even in talking. Anyway, i would like to write something on child right, and explain what is The Concention on the Rights of Child is all about.

《儿童权利公约》 (Convention on the Rights of the Child,CRC) 是一项有关儿童权利的国际公约。

The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) spells out the basic human rights that all children have:

  1. the right to survival
  2. the right to develop to the fullnest
  3. the right to protection from harm
  4. the right to participate fully in family, cultural and social life.

Yet, around the world, children are being denied their rights. In many countries, they suffer because of armed conflict, child labour and sexual exploitation. the problems occur in wealthy nations as well as developing countries.

CRC can be categorised into 4 categories:

1. The right to survive

  • One can survive for only 3 days without water. It is important for water to be clean, as dirty water causes illness, or even death.
  • Children need nutritious food to grow healthly.
  • Homes should have proper sanitation, food, and adults for care and guidance
  • Children should have access to health services such as vaccinations, particularly against life threatening disease such as malaria.

2. The right to develop:

  • A child needs to grow intellectually, psychologically and emotionally as well.
  • A proper balance of education and play time would be the optimum combination.
  • In third world countries, half of the children do not go to school at all. Most of them are girls
  • Playing helps children to develop motor and social skills.

3. The right to be protected

  • Children are vulnerable, they need to be protected and cared for.
  • Child labour is illegal in most countries. Children are easily exploited, and are often overworked and underpaid.
  • Children with disabilities should be given the chance to participate fully in life.
  • Over 2 million children have died stepping on landmines or catching stray bullets. Children should never be exposed to the atrocities of war.

4. The right to participate

  • Children should be included and acknowledge in their respective societies.
  • Every child should be given an identity such as name, religion and nationality. Many children in the third world have not been registered by their parents or have been rejected by their government often over racial issues.
  • Children should be encouraged to express themselves in a positive manner.
  • Last but not least, instead of just existing, every child deserves to live life to the fullnest.

Lastly, what you need to know:

  • There are 54 articles in the CRC, which can be categorised into survival, protection, development and participation.
  • A children is defined as anyone below the age of 18.
  • Malaysia signed the CRC in 1995.
